What is UAL?
The University of the Arts London (UAL) is one of the world's most prestigious art and design universities. UAL comprises six different colleges: Central Saint Martins, London College of Fashion, Camberwell College of Arts, Chelsea College of Arts, London College of Communication, and Wimbledon College of Arts. Every year, thousands of students from around the world apply to UAL.
What is Required for UAL Application?
The most critical element for gaining admission to UAL is your portfolio. While your grades, exams, and reference letters are important, your portfolio is at the center of your application. UAL's expectations are as follows:
- Works that demonstrate your creative thought process
- Technical skills and mastery
- An original artistic voice and perspective
- Sketchbook and process works
- Concept development ability
What Should a UAL Portfolio Look Like?
A UAL portfolio typically consists of between 10 to 20 works. It should include not only finished products but also process works, sketches, and experimental works as integral parts of your portfolio. UAL wants to see how the student thinks — not just what they produced.
Portfolio requirements vary by department:
Central Saint Martins (CSM):Creative risk-taking and experimental work are expected. CSM prefers students who think outside the box.
London College of Fashion (LCF):A portfolio that includes fashion drawing, fabric studies, and trend analysis is required. There are different requirements for fashion design, marketing, or fashion media.
Chelsea College of Arts:Strong technical skills and conceptual thinking are sought for fine arts, graphic communication, and interior architecture.
Camberwell College of Arts:Detailed and original work is expected in the fields of illustration, graphic design, and restoration.
Timeline for UAL Applications
UAL applications are generally made through the UCAS system. Important dates are as follows:
- October — December:Portfolio preparation and school research
- January:UCAS application deadline
- February — March:Portfolio reviews and interviews
- April — May:Admission decisions
- June:Final admission decision
Applying to UAL from Turkey
The process requires a bit more preparation for students applying to UAL from Turkey. Additional steps include language proficiency (IELTS or TOEFL), international transcript conversion, and submission of the portfolio either online or physically.
As Da Vinci Academy, we have worked with many students who have been accepted to UAL. Our students have been accepted to various colleges of UAL — including UAL Product and Furniture Design, UAL Interior Design, UAL Interior and Spatial Design, and UAL Foundation.
Common Mistakes in Portfolio Preparation
1. Only presenting finished works:UAL is a process-oriented university. Be sure to include your sketchbooks and experimental works.
2. Too many different styles:Your portfolio needs to have a consistent artistic voice. Instead of presenting a bit of every style, focus on the area where you are strongest.
3. Not preparing specifically for the school:The portfolio you send to CSM should be different from the one you send to LCF. Each college has its own unique expectations.
4. Not giving importance to the artist statement:Your written application materials are as important as your portfolio. Explain not what you did, but why you did it.
