What is SAIC?
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) is one of the most prestigious art and design schools in the United States. Among SAIC graduates are world-renowned artists and designers.
What is Required for SAIC Application?
The following are required for the SAIC application:
- Portfolio (20 to 25 works)
- Artist statement
- High school diploma or transcript
- English language proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS)
- Letters of recommendation
- Application form and fee
What Should the SAIC Portfolio Look Like?
The SAIC portfolio is quite free and experimental compared to other schools. SAIC looks for:
- Original and bold creative thinking
- Interdisciplinary working ability
- Strong conceptual content
- Experimentation along with technical skill
- The artist's unique perspective
Your portfolio should include:
- At least 10 different types of work
- Sketchbook and process work
- Digital and physical works
- Video or animation works (if any)
How to Write an SAIC Artist Statement?
The artist statement is the most critical written component of the SAIC application. Pay attention to the following:
- Explain why you want to study art or design
- Mention artists or movements that have influenced you
- State why you chose SAIC and what you want to learn there
- Reflect your own artistic voice and perspective
- Keep it between 500 and 650 words
