What is IB Visual Arts?

IB Visual Arts is an advanced art course aimed at high school students, which is part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. Offered in schools worldwide that implement the IB program, this course allows students to develop both their practical art skills and their knowledge of art history and theory. The IB Visual Arts grade provides a significant advantage for students applying to prestigious art schools such as UAL, SAIC, Pratt, NABA, and others.

How is IB Visual Arts Assessed?

IB Visual Arts is offered at two levels: Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). Assessment consists of three main components:

1. Process Portfolio
This is a digital portfolio that documents your entire artistic process. SL students submit 9 to 18, and HL students submit 13 to 25 screenshots. It constitutes 40% of your grade.

2. Comparative Study
This is a research project where you analyze the works of two or more artists. SL students submit 10 to 15, and HL students submit 10 to 15 screenshots and additional analysis. It constitutes 20% of your grade.

3. Exhibition
This is a collection of your original artworks displayed at the end of the term. SL students present 4 to 7, and HL students present 8 to 11 works. It constitutes 40% of your grade.

What Should You Do to Get a High Grade in IB Visual Arts?

1. Create a strong conceptual framework
IB Visual Arts is evaluated not only on technical skills but also on depth of thought. There should be a strong idea and conceptual foundation behind each of your works.

2. Keep your process portfolio organized
The process portfolio cannot be prepared at the last minute. Document your work every week, record your trials and errors. Evaluators want to see your artistic development.

3. Deepen your comparative study
It is not enough to superficially compare just two artists. Analyze the cultural context of the artists, the techniques they used, and the meaning of their works in depth.

4. Strategically plan your exhibition
The works you exhibit should form a coherent and thematic whole. Present works clustered around a strong conceptual theme instead of randomly selected pieces.

5. Keep up with art history and contemporary art
IB Visual Arts evaluators prefer students who are knowledgeable about the art world. Visit museums, follow art magazines, and research contemporary artists.

IB Visual Arts and University Applications

An IB Visual Arts grade provides a significant advantage when applying to art and design universities. Schools like UAL, SAIC, and Pratt particularly prefer students from IB Visual Arts. Additionally, the works you prepare during the IB Visual Arts process can form the foundation of your portfolio.

Common Mistakes Made in IB Visual Arts

1. Neglecting the process portfolio:
Many students focus on finished works and forget to document the process. This is a major mistake — the process accounts for 40% of your grade.

2. Making the comparative study superficial:
Not analyzing artists in depth enough is one of the most common mistakes.

3. Making the exhibition selection randomly:
The works you exhibit must form a consistent whole.

4. Not taking teacher feedback into account:
Take your teachers' feedback seriously during the IB Visual Arts process and develop your work accordingly.
